In 2005, five social studies teachers from Plano Senior High School formed a classic-rock and blues band now called Custer’s Last Band—a nod to nearby Custer Road and their history-teaching backgrounds. They began casually as a group of teachers willing to perform at a school function for fun.

Understand, this is no garage band. They practice in one of the portables on the school campus.

The week before school ended for the summer, they invited us to sit in on a practice session. By day, the classroom is filled with students learning about significant moments in history and important world leaders. By late afternoon, “Wooly Bully” reverberates off the walls.
