Barbara Walch
![]() Her good taste and culinary expertise has whet readers' appetites for more than 20 years. Food Editor Barbara Walch joined Plano Profile in 1986. Three years later, a readership survey indicated the need for a cooking feature including recipes. Executive Editor Mike Newman looked at Barbara and said, "You're it. You're the new food writer." It started out as a one page column, with a small photo of the food, an even smaller photo of the featured cook, and a third- to a-half-page of recipe(s). Today, it is a 3-page feature with at least two photos, and it continues to be a favorite in the magazine. Barbara says, "Being the social person I am, I love the opportunities to meet the most interesting people in our community and tell their story in print, even when they think they don't have a story to tell! Everyone has a story to tell ... they just don't always know it. And I'm pleased to say that I have become close friends with a few of the people I've interviewed over the years. Now that's rewarding!" Barbara tells us that fun in her family centered on food and some of her best memories are of those family get-togethers. Her Polish grandparents, Busia and Dziadzi, both loved to cook and made their ethnic specialties. Her Grandma Burns, as they affectionately called her dad's mother, made her living as a cook for the priests at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Barbara is a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) and American Institute of Wine & Food (AIWF). She was a member of the host committee for the IACP conference held in Dallas in 2005 and co-chaired the closing event – a barbecue festival and celebrity chef cook-off. She is also a member of the Plano Symphony Orchestra Guild's hospitality committee and served as co-chair for the CITY House founders dinner held in 2008. In her spare time, Barbara loves to play golf, read cookbooks, spend time with friends, and volunteer in the community. Guests at her fantasy dinner party would include Julia Child, Kent and Kevin Rathbun, Andrea Immer, and Jean Newman ... They would all cook dinner and sip on the best wines. Heavenly! E-mail Barbara
