Officials from Texas Health Resources (THR) and Plano Presbyterian Hospital in particular made it clear last month that they were very sad to see Florence Shapiro retiring from the Texas State Senate. A veteran of two decades in Austin, Shapiro has long been known for her advocacy on behalf of education, children, and healthcare issues.
In thanking her for her service, THR CEO Doug Hawthorne described Shapiro as always "available, welcoming, and attentive." Hawthorne presented her the 2012 Excellence in Public Service Award.
Fighting back tears Shapiro told the crowd of some 200 hospital staff and friends of her love for public service which has included terms as a Plano council member and as mayor in addition to service with numerous civic and nonprofit organizations and boards.
